Abstract:This article examines the significance of firm and market effects on profitability using a sample of smaller, unquoted firms over the period 1991-1993.The results indicate that in the periods of upturn an inverse relationship btw. firm size and profitability existed. However, this effect was typically reversed in recessionary years. Smaller firms experienced much greater variation in their profits. No identifiable growth-profit trade-off was found and somewhat surprisingly internal governance had little impact on profits.
