Abstract:Services are the unsung heroes in keeping overall rates down. The U.S. may not have achieved total victory over inflation, but the war certainly is going well. Despite the stunningly high 5.6% annual growth in the gross domestic product during the first quarter, price increases remain tame - virtually across the economy. At the heart of the phenomenon is a simple truth: Prices of services are rising more slowly than they used to. The inflation rate for housing, medical care, college tuition, and auto insurance are on a downward path.
