Abstract:This article studies the conversion of a number of English football clubs into public limited companies in the late Victorian period. The evidence in the article suggests that those who purchased shares of these enterprises were mostly male, middle class, married and middle aged. The authors conclude that few people bought shares with the intention of direct financial gain. Mostly shares were bought in social rather than economic terms.
