Abstract:The story of how Volkswagen made the transition from a one-car company to a multinational, is described. Since 1981, Volkswagen management must inform its Work Councils and seek their support before making any major decisions affecting the company. By granting its workers far-reaching rights, the company has also created an atmosphere of shared responsibility. It believes in a system of cooperation which respects a clash of interests rather than a system of confrontation. Profits are not the goal but a means of reaching the goals. The careful consideration given to the social aspects of company decisions, is one of the major differences between American and German managers. The three-year apprenticeship program of the firm is presented.
