Abstract:The orthodox economics is presently dominated by a mechanistic metaphor. Unfortunately, the metaphor of a machine excludes knowledge, qualitative change and irreversibility through time, and entraps economics in an equilibrium schema. This article examines the roles of the mechanical and biological analogies in economic science.
