| Abstract: | Empowerment is a popular business buzzword. But is it just a fad? This article shows why decentralization in business is a response to the changes in the economics of decision making enabled by new information technologies. In the knowledge-based economy, decentralized decision makers will play increasingly important roles. But, how to design effective decentralized systems and how to manage the continually shifting balance between empowerment and control?
