Abstract:The paper examines in detail considerable number of cases of university inventing. This is to better understand the nature of the projects that led to inventions reported in invention reports, the motivations for the research, and the processes and mechanisms involved in connecting with industry for technology transfer. The cases forming the basis of this report are of inventions created at Columbia University and Stanford University. This study is restricted to a set of inventions for which the universities sought and obtained intellectual property rights, typically in the form of patents.
