Abstract:This paper explores the limitations of interorganizational (hereafter as: i-o.) knowledge acquisition with conditions under which viable i-o. relationships (here as: r-ship/s) do not materialize. Within the empirical context of corporate venture capital (CVC), analyzed is a sample of more than 1,600 start-up-stage ventures receiving funding during the 1990s. Under a strong intellectual property protection (IPP) regime, industry overlap is associated with an increase in the likelihood of an investment r-ship/s. The findings suggest that many r-ship/s do not form because the company will not invest unless the entrepreneur discloses his/her invention, and the entrepreneur may be careful to do so, in the fear of imitation.
