Abstract:Two case studies of manufacturers IBM and Xerox are presented. The two companies used a simplification strategy to implement an automation and modernization program and achieved extremely positive results. One important element in this simplification process that both companies have performed well, the reduction of the number of parts per product, is discussed in detail. Finally, it is illustrated how a company can create an overall, holistic plan for simplification. It minimizes the tendency to merely automate the problems.
