Abstract: | The abundance of computer generated documents may create more problems in engineering than it has solved. 9 per cent of scrap in aerospace industry could be traced to bad or missing design information. The reason: the wrong version of a drawing had been passed from design to manufacturing. Large manufacturers are turning to a new class of software to impose order on the abundance of computer generated design documents, and perhaps Product Data Management (PDM) can save ill-managed product life cycles. A key benefit of PDM is that it can serve as interface between computer aided systems and other applications. A guide to PDMs and companies offering them is presented. |
