Abstract: | This paper quantifies and compares the size of the welfare (hereafter as: w-f. losses arising from the use of alternative 'imperfect' w-f. indicators (as: inds.) as substitutes for the conventionally preferred consumption inds. It is found that the size of the w-f. losses associated with different inds. varies considerably. An asset-based index and the share of food as targeting (as: t-g.) inds. were found to have the highest w-f. losses relative to all other t-g. inds. examined. This paper's preferred w-f. index implies that the losses from the two best t-g. inds. are statistically significant but very low, less than 5 percent. |
