Abstract: | Automated Identification (Auto ID) applications can provide corporate information systems with the identity of each physical item in the supply chain in an automated and timely manner. This paper focuses on the application of Auto ID to improve four basic logistics processes: shipping, transportation, receiving and in-facility operations. The authors examine the potential of very low cost Auto ID for both improving supply chain operations and enabling new services to customers of all kind. The authors conclude that beyond the cost cutting and improved processes offered by Auto ID, it can facilitate strategic improvements in store and warehouse operations and in network-wide agility. Auto ID systems provide a likely catalyst for the development of a new generation of decision support systems. |
