Abstract:A review of the situation of U.S. pension funds and institutional endowments after the 1987 stock market crash, indicating that such funds were not adversely affected, due to diversification, and were assisted by portfolio insurance, although some funds are cancelling their portfolio insurance or are rethinking its use in the future. The use of strategic asset allocation is referred to as a hedge against shift risk.
