Abstract:The "unseen revolution" of pension funds has been transforming corporate ownership by the rise of pension funds as the major shareholder. Today the largest pension funds hold 10 percent of the equity capital of the largest USA companies. New perspectives are offered on one of the most startling power shifts in economic history. Pension funds, according to the author, must address two critical issues: For what should corporate management be held accountable, and how should accountability be structured? The outlines of the answers can be found in Germany and Japan. The way industry defines performance and results in Germany and Japan is discussed. All elements that go into the concept can be quantified with rigour.
