Abstract: | This paper presents a number of different classification methods. The Gatekeeper-procedure can be seen as predecessor of modern rule induction tools. The relationship between statistical analysis and rule induction s complex. Machine learning methods do not force a decision into a functional form, as discriminant and logit or probit procedures do. Rule induction methods will better reflect the actual decision-making behavior. The case study shows that for marketing applications, rule induction is a potentially powerful tool to examine buyer behavior in a way quite different from existing statistical methods. |
