Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is supposed to be synonymous with expert systems. In fact, these expert systems can be considered almost mature technologies which constitute only a small portion of AI. Some examples of expert systems: MYCIN - a medical diagnosis systems; PROSPECTOR - a mineral discovery system; DENDRAL - a chemical analysis system. There are hundreds of expert systems today. Examined is the future role of systems professionals when true AI is available. The two alternatives are: acquire the technology or lose the competitive edge.
