Abstract: | This paper deals with earnings management (hereafter as: e-mgmt.) in public (here as: pbl.) and private (as: prv.) companies (as: comps.) and whether e-mgmt. is a function of leverage based on a matched sample of 99 pbl. and 99 prv. comps. It is found that there is no significant differences in the accounting choice or e-mgmt. measures btw. pbl. and prv. comps. In addition, it is indicated that highly leveraged comps. are more likely to use income increasing accounting methods than comps. with a low leverage. However, the impact of leverage on accounting choices does not significantly differ btw. pbl. and prv. comps. |
