Abstract:In the paper, recent research on the impact of an aging population on the distribution of income is reviewed. A short account of demographic trends in the industrialized world is given, after a brief discussion on the demographic conditions responsible for population aging. Several levels of aggregation are distinguished. The paper makes a difference btw. inter- and intragenerational issues, btw. direct and indirect demographic inequality effects, and btw the distribution of current and lifetime income. The critical role of age-related re-distributive tax-transfer systems is emphasized.
