Abstract:Institutions and policies in Sweden have been rather experimental: some of these experiments may also be relevant for other developed countries. Sweden may therefore be seen as a full-scale social and economic laboratory. Sweden was able to combine a fast rate of GDP growth with full employment, economic security, and rather equalitarian distribution of income during the first decades after World War II. Economic and social performance deteriorated subsequently, in terms of economic growth about 1970, the distribution of income from the mid-1980s, and full employment and economic security from the early 1990s.
