Abstract:This article investigates the significance of innovative social policies such as universal systems of childcare, a shorter work week and shared parental leave to the work-life balance of coupled low-waged women in England. The findings of the interview-based study suggest that low-waged women have the experience that current social policies limit their choices of negotiating their work-life balance. The interviewed women found shorter working hours of both parents a positive factor, enabling the fathers to spend more time caring for their children and improving not only the children's but the whole family's quality of life.
