Abstract: | Latin America's (henceforth as: L-A.) economic performance has been poor during the last decades and many of its structural weaknesses have deepened. Neo-liberal reforms made little impact on L-A.'s high level of persistent poverty and income inequality. L-A.'s high concentration of income and wealth has impacted negatively on its economic performance. Because of the failure of the neo-liberal model of the last three decades, policy debates in L-A. today focuses on the search for alternatives. Common problems are the lack of incentives for innovation and redistribution and the existence of a prevalent but weak state. L-A.'s governments will face enormous obstacles to fulfilling their political mandate and reforming the structure of the economy. |
