Abstract:In this article, presented is a historical analysis of three eras in the Las Vegas gaming industry leadership: a maverick era, a mafia era, and an MBA era. Within each period, highlighted are the roles of key figures shaping the industry's evolving landscape. Examined are also management applications emerging from each of these periods with a focus on four areas: 1. operating principles, 2. government relations, 3. "backlash management", and 4. the ways in which the mythologies of these eras have been used in the selling of the city itself. Included are summaries of the successes and failures of this evolution.
