Abstract:"Telecommuting", a term coined by Jack Nilles in the mid-1970s, describes the substitution of telecommunication and computers for the commute to a central office. (Similar terms: alternative work sites, distance workers, work-at-home programs, teleworking). Some advantages and disadvantages of telecommunicating a described and analyzed. Homeworking requires a new perspective by managers. They must reassess their ingrained notions about how to manage out-of-sight workers and develop new management techniques to meet the challenges and opportunities of this non-traditional workforce. Four key questions are posed about the selection of the right jobs, the right employees, the willingness of supervisors, and the readiness of the company for the necessary changes.
