| Abstract: | The announcement of the sale of Rover in February 1994 to BMW marks the end of the last British-owned mass car manufacturer. It is also a striking illustration of the degree of openness to inward investment in Britain. This article shows that this welcoming attitude towards inward investment has a long history. A detailed historical account of British policy towards inward investment is offered, making comparisons with other countries' policies where possible. British policy is summarized and questions are raised over its future direction. |
