Abstract:In Porter's approach business strategy is equal to competitive strategy. However, an alternative school of strategic thought has emerged which emphasizes the role of cooperative rather than competitive arrangements between industry participants: collaborative advantage. According to Porter, many companies are being lured into the cosy embrace of alliances, when their primary need remains that of sharpening their competitive thrust, rather than dulling it via collaboration with other firms. The real strategic choice where and how much to collaborate , and where and how intensely to act competitively.
