Abstract: | Hybrid teams, which include members in multiple geographic locations, use both face-to-face communication and computer-mediated interaction to communicate with each other. The authors focused on three hybrid teams in one organization as a case study in management practices. The paper identifies four sets of paradoxical frames in hybrid teams: remoteness - closeness, cultural uniformity - cultural diversity, rationality emotionality and control empowerment. The qualitative analysis of the hybrid teams indicates that teams engaged in three cognitive tensions caused by these paradoxical frames: integrating, differentiating and polarizing. The findings provide a better understanding of how managers influence cognitive processes. |
