| Abstract: | The European market for cough and cold remedies is considered, with focusing on the markets of France, Italy, the UK and Germany. The over-the-counter (OTC) market includes: decongestants, chest rubs and inhalants, cold preparations (cold, influenza, hot remedies), cough preparations, throat remedies. One of the largest OTC sectors, the market of cough and cold remedies is essentially demand led. Growth rates in the four major markets over 1986-1990 range from stasis in Germany to 40 percent in France. The UK and German markets declined in 1989 and 1990. There has been a polarisation between single-function and multifunction products. Recent growth sectors include systemic decongestants, influenza treatments, hot remedies and pharyngeal preparations. |
