Abstract:It's the public that pays, through inflated healthcare costs and medications that are often priced beyond the reach of many who need them. In 1990 , Americans spent more than USD 67 billion for prescription drugs. While drugs are less than one-tenth of the nation's health-care budget, their prices shot up at three times the rate of inflation in the 1980s - a startling 152 percent, far outpacing even the rise in other health-care costs. Pharmaceutical companies are the darlings of Wall Street. The recession scarcely bothers an industry that is the most profitable in the coutry and has relatively captive market.
