Abstract:This study explores major manufacturing technologies' adoption of an industry over many decades, demonstrating that two groups of contingencies related to adoption, namely, timing and cumulative effects, have a significant impact on firm performance. Based on a sample of more than 1.000 U.K. firms, insights are provided into the effects of adoption timing and 'manufacturing technology bundles' on firm survival. It is also found that adoption of manufacturing technologies prior to the inflection point of the estimated Bass diffusion curve for each technology leads to significant reduction in firm mortality. Thus, the ability of the Bass model in predicting the survival outcomes of firms that face manufacturing technology adoption decisions can be shown.
