Abstract: | Since mid-2000 there has been a significant slowdown in global economic growth, marking the end of an extraordinarily dynamic phase. The determining factors were, firstly, the rise in oil prices, which served to dampen down economic activity. Secondly, monetary policy had applied the brakes, in order to reduce the rapid rate of growth recorded until the middle of the year and thus counter any acceleration of inflation. |
