Abstract:The subjects of the paper are informal economic sector and economic conditions in Ukraine. The author of the article examines the estimates and simulations of the development of shadow economy in Ukraine. The paper pays an attention to the economic background of the country and considers the size of its shadow economy. The author provides quantitative analysis of the causes of shadow economy. He states that there is no doubt that the shadow economy plays a big part in the transition countries. For Ukraine the estimates range from 30% to 100% of the official figure for the GDP. But for economic policy the question of how the shadow economy can be reduced is more important then its absolute size.
