Abstract:The subjects of the paper are business enterprises and economic conditions in East Germany. The authors state that East German industry was still regarded as a problem child in early days of the economic reconstruction and present results of a survey which examined the restructuring process in East German industry since 1991 to 2002. The paper pays an attention to the economic background of East Germany and to situation and short term development prospects for German companies. The article also considers the subjects of the estimation of the German industry's competitiveness and integration of the German industry in the international division of labor. The authors provide an inset: The Company Survey by DIW Berl.
