| Abstract: | This paper explores the use of French words and phrases in English medium newspaper articles dealing with the Nov. 2005 riots in France. Examined are ways in which the French elements are incorporated into the English discourse. Dealt with are the motivations for the usage, with illustration of stylistic effects etc. It is concluded that the use of French is here an effective communicative device. |
