Abstract:This paper investigates the use of contingent forms of employment in two diverse country contexts - the UK and Sweden - and examines the influence of changing regulatory and economic conditions over a period which covers the current economic downswing. Three questions are addressed in this paper: how employers balance their flexibility preferences in the context of regulatory constraints; how the global recession has affected employer behaviour; to what extent the Swedish experience can be explained by convergence on other country models. The research bases on both quantitative and qualitative data.
