Abstract:The resource-based view of the firm has not been systematically applied to strategic alliances. By examining the role of firm's resources in strategic alliances, this paper puts forward a general resource-based theory of strategic alliances, synthesizing the various findings in the literature on alliances from a resource-based view. The proposed theory covers 4 major aspects of strategic alliances: 1. rationale, 2. formation, 3. structural preferences, and 4. performance. Certain resource characteristics promise accentuated value-creation, thus facilitating alliance formation. As part of the theory, this paper proposes a typology of inter-partner resource alignment based on the 2 dimensions of resource similarity and resource utilization, yielding 4 types of alignment. The paper develops a number of propositions to facilitate empirical testing of the theoretical framework, suggests ways to carry out this testing, indicates future research directions, and lists some of the more significant managerial implications of the framework.
