Abstract:The article studies the issue of using geographic information system (GIS) for market research purposes in tourism marketing, by analyzing travel pattern data collected from a rural county in North Carolina, USA. GIS offers an easy tool for mapping and displaying spatially oriented concepts, such as travel patterns. The maps generated with GIS show a clear indication of regions, counties and towns that could be considered as potential marketing and developing collaborators. Furthermore, GIS can identify new potential markets by modeling trip distances from travel pattern data.
