Abstract:A decade of observed large differences in productivity driven competitive advantage cannot be explained by traditional productivity notions or conventional strategic analysis. Adam Smith's specialization paradigm needs to be supplemented by the time paradigm of nonlinear systems dynamics for productivity growth to continue. This has both theoretical and practical consequences for managing toward competitive advantage and requires a new approach to management, control, and organization. Four traditional drives of productivity are examined: specialization, experience, complexity, technology. Theoretical and empirical evidence supporting the new, response time acceleration paradigm is provided.
