Abstract:This paper explores the effects of an individual's similarity to the demographic composition of the working team on individual-level attitudes with 98 working groups from a life-insurance company. Individuals' attitudes toward their working team and perceptions of advancement opportunities were affected by similarity in race-ethnicity. Within working units demographic variables can have differing complexities in their effects on employee attitudes. Demographic similarity is an important component of the social context in which the individual operates.
