Abstract:Many strategic alliances (SAs) fail. The findings of a research which was conducted on small dedicated biotechnology companies in North America to determine the role of SAs in the process of technological innovation are reported. It is shown that SAs are increasingly taking place between small firms and larger organizations. A lot of elements which are important to both the formulation and facilitation of SAs are identified. A series of guidelines are presented. These allow managers to make more effective decisions regarding SA formation and offer practitioners a conceptual framework on which to base SA formation and implementation. At the same time the possible costs of SA formation are identified.
