Abstract:Management of tight production flows implies a different organization of production, based notably on the rejection of traditional specialization linked to separation of tasks. The essence of the techniques of "just-in-time" (JIT) production and the Kanban system is described and analyzed. A few examples taken from the experience of Japanese companies are presented. The specific changes required in equipment management, labour and relationships with suppliers for the efficient application of the "just-in-time" techniques are examined. All the examples from Japan, Europe and the USA clearly show that the firm's social and economic environment will have an impact on the JIT implementation.
