Abstract:This article examines the economic determinants of the joint retirement process of married couples by proposing a dynamic discrete choice model for retirement decisions. Non-trivial saving behaviour is allowed in this model, and using a population-based administrative register, the model is estimated on a 1% sample of Danish couples. The authors focus on the elasticities of participation/retirement with respect to income, and the findings suggest that there is a notable asymmetry in the sensitivity of retirement behaviour of men and women with respect to variation in their own income flows or that of their spouses.
