Abstract:This study explores the roles that competence trust, formal contract, and time horizon have in interorganizational learning. Two types of learning - knowledge accessing and knowledge acquisition - are identified in the beginning. Then, the relative roles of competence trust are assessed and contracted on the types of learning. Further, it is investigated how time horizon forms their roles. The hypotheses are tested with a sample consisting of 126 buyer-supplier relationships between the Hong Kong toy traders and their suppliers. The results indicate that knowledge accessing and acquisition's requirements on the competence trust and contract of an exchange relationship vary greatly. The requirements also alter with the time horizon of the relationship.
