Abstract:In recent years the percentage of consumer spending devoted to chemists' and household goods has varied little. The structure of these sectors is in process of being affected by government efforts to cut the visible cost of the National Health Service (NHS). The regional pattern of spending on these goods in 1992 is shown. Prices of household equipment stagnated. Chemists' goods registered a price rise. The government has imposed no more than a 2, 5% cut in drugs price. This was partly to avoid damage to an industry which has been the second largest export revenue earner.
