Abstract: | The completion of the single European Community (EC) market in 1992 is widely expected in substantial benefits, due to increased allocative and dynamical efficiency. However, one essential condition: the preservation of competitive markets has to be met. Major upheavals in the economic environment exposing firms to intensive competitive pressures, may result in adopting strategies to weaken the competitive impact, including mergers and takeovers to maintain or strengthen positions. An effective policy towards monopoly and mergers is regarded as an important weapon to ensure the greatest possible benefit. However, there is a great deal of uncertainty about what should be done. Some of its sources are examined. |
