| Abstract: | The paper reviews the nature and characteristics of the phenomenon of financial reduction in universities and university systems from the late 1970s to the present. Five categories of financial reduction are presented, with an analysis of the underlying factors, and the nature of characteristic university responses. Especial attention is devoted to a consideration of Category V: relative financial reduction , coupled with a substantial increase in demand, and a discussion of the effectiveness of approaches associated with so-called "restructuring". |
