Abstract:The report analyses the retail market for eyewear in Germany The German eyewear market has been characterized by general decline in 1996. In value terms spectacles constituted by far the largest sector in 1996 with an 83.2% share. Contact lenses have wittnessed the most dynamic growth. The spectacles sector has suffered due to the cuts in general consumer spending and insurance pay-outs. All sectors have been affected negatively by declines in disposable income. Value sales decreased by 1.6% to stand at DM5,655 million between 1992-96. The market was dominated by Rodenstock. Euromonitor expects value sales of eyewear to decrease further till the end of the decade, but anticipates moderate growth as soon as the German economy recovers. The eyewear market is expected to increase by 0.2% to DM5, 666 million over the period 1996-2001.
