Abstract: | The role administrators play in helping to develop organization presents challenges different from challenges in private organizations that produce goods and services. This study explores how a select group of retired community college presidents constructed their concepts of themselves as leaders. The paper states that through in-depth interviews these former presidents mapped the course of their leadership through seven critical approaches: empowering, energizing, healing, inspiring, revealing, cultivating, and humanizing the organization and its participants. From these former leaders we understand further that the quest for cultural leadership is a philosophical one, not simply a managerial one. The paper provides a substantial list of references on this subject. |
