Abstract:The increasing popularity of joint ventures, particularly for international operations, has underscored the importance of a difficult question: how should the performance of a joint venture be assessed? The difficulties of joint venture performance evaluation are discussed. Joint ventures are often undertaken for amorphous purposes, and in highly uncertain, risky settings. Conventional performance appraisals tend to be misleading under such circumstances. It is shown how appraisals are usually conducted. An alternative model is developed and proposed. Different measures of performance are defined. Principles for setting performance weights are determined. Inputs, outputs and the transformation process are considered.
