Abstract:The PIMS /profit impact of market strategy/ project is reviewed, 28 PIMS strategy principles selected for research are enumerated and grouped on the basis of the type of relationship they define. Three hypotheses on the applicability of PIMS strategy principles in Japan and their perception by Japanese managers are made. A survey was conducted and Japan-USA comparison was made, the results of which are presented. The findings suggest that most of the PIMS principles are perceived by Japanese executives to apply in Japan. A firm's market position is considered the most important influence on firm performance. The level of veracity of many strategy issues is perceived differently.
