Abstract:This article examines the relations between classification and competition, employing the theoretical framework of selection system theory. More than one classification system can be in use and the proportion of classification systems used by consumers is a determinant of the risks of category spanning and radical innovation. In addition, these risks can be better understood by taking into consideration if the selection system has different stages occupied by the selectors of different types or not and by looking at the relations between the selectors of the primary market and the selectors of these selectors.
